The Minimal Pipeline Architecture

Pipelining is used in almost all recent processor architectures to increase the performance. It is, however, difficult to achieve the theoretical speedup of pipelining, because code dependencies cause delays in execution. Processor designers must use complex techniques like forwarding, register renaming and branch prediction to reduce the loss of performance due to this problem. In this paper we introduce abstract Minimal Pipeline Architecture (MPA) featuring special two level pipelining. MPA offers interesting advantages over architectures using deeper pipelines: Pipeline delays as well as register file bandwidth problems are absent in MPA. Also the utilization of functional units is better in MPA than in basic RISC machines. A preliminary performance evaluation of MPA is given.
